Virtual reality (VR) is the ability to interact with a digitally reproduced environment or object that resembles an actual experience for the user. In healthcare settings, the technology is utilized to enhance mobility for rehabilitation patients, or to help relax and distract during medical procedures. VR is still in the very beginning stages of use and adoption within the clinical practice. In this article, we offer an overview of the existing literature to identify obstacles and barriers to the implementation of VR in healthcare settings.
The majority of the issues discovered in this study were related to the adopter system as well as the organization categories of the NASSS framework, particularly the needs of healthcare professionals for education and training in VR, the lack of research and evidence about the added value of VR in the context of treatment, and the perceived low self-efficacy and confidence in applying and work with VR during the course of patient treatment. Many studies have recommended the use of methods of behavioral change, such as education and training or intervision groups to help clinicians make better decisions procedures with respect to VR.
Facilitators were not as often identified, such as the young age of patients that could be more open to new technologies and feel more comfortable with it, or the fact that VR can provide an immersive and interactive learning environment that stimulates the senses and encourages greater understanding of complicated scientific concepts. Additionally, the capability of VR to simulate real-world environments like the planet’s surface or the structure of atoms makes it a useful education tool for students to explore and experiment with complicated and abstract ideas that might be difficult to comprehend in traditional classrooms.
